Congratulations to President-Elect Obama.
And life goes on.
Our 74 percent centrist-conservative country has not seen a conservative major party presidential candidate since 1984. John McCain struggled to impersonate a conservative, eventually summoning help from the Great White North.
After his eight-year presidency, we must at least thank George W. Bush for taking aggressive approaches on national security and reduced taxation. But we must acknowledge that Bush otherwise acted much like America’s two three-letter acronym presidents.
Election 2008 presents conservatives—real ones—with renewed reason to fight like hell in the war of ideas. That reason has a name: Barack Obama.
Let’s look at a definition.
Totalitarian: of or relating to a political regime based on subordination of the individual to the state and strict control of all aspects of the life and productive capacity of the nation.
Raising the specter of such terminology at this point in American history does not constitute over-the-top hyperbole Two sobering volumes make this point clear: Liberal Fascism, by Jonah Goldberg, and A Conservative History of the American Left, by Daniel J. Flynn. Let us say ten Hail Hillaries and three Our Savior Baracks, for America stands at the threshold of succumbing to the whims of all-knowing, totalitarian “progressives.”
Step 1: FDR and LBJ establish a path to a left-wing state.
Step 2: Ronald Reagan temporarily ignites conservatism, but weak and ultimately corrupt Republicans squander the achievement, abandon core conservative principles, and turn America back toward the dark side.
Step 3: Liberal viruses, disguised and aided by a complicit media, sicken our society. Schools teach globalism, multiculturalism, collectivism, and “social justice.” Moral relativism and equivalence blur right, wrong, good, and bad. “Tolerance” legitimizes familial, sexual, and general behavioral degeneracy. Self-esteem becomes accepted as a cause of achievement, not its product. Lousy decision makers and life’s bystanders come to expect rescue from self-destruction. George W. Bush aided and abetted liberalism with his nationalization of education, prescription drug entitlement, and an unwillingness to use the spending bill veto pen. Our gigantic deficit can be reduced, but undo the education and drug messes? Good luck.
Step 4: Obama. Commanding Earth’s atmosphere to cool will take a lot out of the mighty messiah, but many of the 62+ million Americans who voted for the man will now clamor for their chances to cuddle rabbits that Obama will pull from his hat. So after a day’s rest, the new President will outlaw human nature, thereby equalizing talent, skills, intelligence, intestinal fortitude, industriousness and happiness. Anyone possessing more of these qualities than Obama deems fair will find said qualities “spread” “around.” Barack Obama will use skills honed during the campaign to vilify TV networks, reporters, and newspapers that probe for answers or clarification. The messiah will discredit and demean plumbers. High taxation opponents shall be branded “unpatriotic.” Barack’s background shall be off-limits. “Socialism” shall be banned—just the word, not actual socialism. Anyone who wants more income than the President deems okay will be “greedy.”
Will Obama and the Democrat-controlled Congress seek bipartisan compromise? Hint: They have domination.
The survival of a prosperous America demands that liberalism be met head on, not capitulated to. Principled conservatives must become tenacious and not “reach across the aisle” to negotiate feel-good compromises.
History bursts with cocky, overconfident leaders removed from power after brash, absurd, disastrous, or ineffective exploits. Obama, Reid, and Pelosi will lead überliberals wielding “change” characterized by all of these adjectives. Most Americans have repeatedly called for fiscal conservatism, self-reliance, rule of law, and a free-market economy. Yet these three particular liberals will push “progressive” government which has always spawned calamity—always. This time, progressivism will fail spectacularly. Cocky and overconfident, progressives already are. Carelessness is sure to follow close behind.
It’s time for Republicans to grow up and grow a set.
In one scenario, Democrats will quickly implement stratospheric social spending and income redistribution. Decay will be rapid. Real conservatives will reintroduce real sanity in 2010. By 2012, Americans will embrace truth spoken by a genuinely conservative presidential candidate poised to replace Obama, who by that time will be in deeper denial of reality than he is today.
In another scenario, Obama and the Dems will proceed at a more measured pace. Americans will continue to experience the boiled frog syndrome as destructive change slowly kills. In 2012, voters awaiting the messiah’s life-altering miracles will want to give him more time.
Today is not the time for lily-livered Republicans dressed up as “conservatives.” Calling all hockey moms and others with more gumption in their pinkies than in all of today’s elephants-in-name-only.
