The ‘racism’ smokescreen

Google returns 6.4 million hits for “only Whites can be racist.”

Many have plumbed the depths of such twaddle—more so recently. To “diversity” consultant Glenn Singleton, Whites are de facto racists because Whites plan ahead, a behavior which mustn’t be expected of non-Whites, who should simply be appreciated for being different. Competitive Enterprise Institute’s Hans Bader observed that Singleton teaches that only Whites can be racist and that we must downplay “annoying white characteristics, such as being ‘task-oriented’ and ‘intellectual’.”1

Mushy thinkers preach the religion of diversity and imagine racism where none exists. Former President and national embarrassment Jimmy Carter recently declared that “an overwhelming portion” of the resistance to President Obama’s agenda “is based on the fact that he is a black man.”2 Does it matter that said resistance comes in opposition to Obama “transforming” America into something most Americans abhor?

Who is racist, someone who values results independent of who achieves them, or the diversity zealot who teaches that Whites must be scolded for acting white while Blacks must be appreciated for acting black? Who thinks more clearly, someone who attacks issues or Jimmy Carter, who attacks people that attack issues? Obama worshippers have grown so shrill in the face of weakening support for the Chosen One that it’s nearly impossible to criticize the man without being called racist. This knee-jerk labeling serves as camouflage for liberals, who are naturally unskilled at logic and deserted by facts.

Racism is “a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race.”3 Racists are people who regard others differently based on race. Those who call Obama’s critics “racist” are essentially trying to redefine the word in order to demonize opponents of Obama’s agenda.

Whether or not 40,000 years ago Billy Bob Suds Drinker ridiculed Devan Who Dances With Rhythm based purely on Mr. Rhythm’s skin color can never be known. But racism has been around since at least the 1300s, according to the late Stanford University history professor George M. Fredrickson.4 But now any progress has stalled, for in today’s America, prominent lighter tones cannot criticize prominent darker tones without fear of being branded as a horrible person.

The American scene is so flush with venom that many have disengaged, ignoring how today’s historic events are shaping our future. Only in the last two months have people raised their voices sufficiently to get the attention of Obama and Congressional Democrats who want to take over their health care.

Why have Americans been absent until now?

Unless we stop obsessing over how Britney lost weight or whether Yorgi the androgynous multicultural yodeler can win American Idol, the American dream will become a nightmare under the direction of our leftwing president. Corrupt Democrats and Republicans have already commandeered the dream for their personal ends and have caved to special interests bearing contributions and votes. A damn sight more of us had better concentrate on stopping the radical from transforming America into the next failed socialist state.

Sometimes criminal, often tribalistic, and always loud agenda hounds abound: ACORN (Association of Community Organizers for Reform Now), National Endowment for the Arts parasites, sexual orientation advocacy groups, labor unions like SEIU (Service Employees International Union), United Auto Workers, AFL-CIO, National Education Association, and the American Federation of Teachers, as well as minority groups like the NAACP and the National Hispanic Cultural Center, or Institute, or University, or Medical Association, or Scholarship Fund—the list goes on and on. Furthermore, citizens are under constant scrutiny by political correctness police.

Yet hope springs.

Just when the Chosen One appeared poised to grab our health care, the people rose in townhall meetings and the streets of Washington to say, “Enough!”

Obama and the Democrats have overreached. They are flailing and failing, beginning their death march to 2010 and 2012. But this is no time to return to focusing on Donny Osmond’s status on Dancing with the Stars. Power-drunk Democrats have gotten close enough to the health care trough to smell the “public option,” close enough to be driven insane with desire for control over the masses. They’ll pass a health care “fix”—something they and Obama can claim as theirs. They’ll eventually push for the whole enchilada.

Meanwhile, Democrats will try to move on to “fixing” the non-problem of global warming with their non-fix—the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade bill. Having failed to punish the evil private insurers, they’ll be hungrier than ever to tax the evil energy producers and use skyrocketing utility rates to “nudge” us toward “green” energy producers that can’t produce enough to grow the economy.

Which brings us back to racism. No mystery why that’s been the media’s focus.
