Progressive tyranny in utopian disguise

Something has been happening in America for decades under the “enlightened guidance” of progressive politicians, “educators,” and media types. In The Brussels Journal, self-described “voice of conservatism in Europe,” State University of New York English Professor Tom Bertonneau writes of Obama’s agenda:

The consequence of “transforming America” (or any other Western nation) will not be the utopian dream world of the regnant radical usurpation, which remains unrealizable; it will simply be destruction in and for itself: Widespread misery compounded in equal parts of manipulative tyranny through bureaucratic regulation and the hedonistic chaos of entitlement-driven demands. Governments will exploit carefully created divisions to squelch dissent through “hate-speech” laws and programs of so-called anti-discrimination.

Bertonneau’s perspective on progressives reflexively summoning utopia in the face of non-utopian realities reminds me of an observation made by economist Thomas Sowell:

Many on the political left are so entranced by the beauty of their vision that they cannot see the ugly reality they are creating in the real world.

Progressives fear that viewing people as people really are can only lead to feeling bad. For instance, progressives marvel at the “peaceful” religion of Islam and preach the wonders of multiculturalism even as millions of radical Muslims rejoice in their radical comrades invoking Allah while killing innocent people. Selective blindness yields progressive vision. Moral expediency announces one’s arrival on the liberal stage.
